Cut Your Risk Of Breast Cancer With More Cardio!

, published .

The precise causes of breast cancer are unclear, but the primary risk factors for breast cancer development are age and genetics. Unfortunately, no woman – yourself included – has a say about her age or her genetics.

However, there is something you can do to negate the potential ill effects breast cancer can wreak on your health: Ramp up your cardio!

Not only do recent studies suggest that physical activity – especially cardio – can reduce your risk of breast cancer, but it also factors into other, better-known risk factors, like obesity. Read on to learn more about how a few extra cardio sessions can make a huge difference to your health!

Studies of breast cancer and cardiovascular health

Broadly speaking, there are many studies concluding that physically active women have a lower risk of breast cancer than those who are inactive. In fact, a 2013 analysis of 31 studies found that physical activity can reduce the risk of breast cancer by an average of 12 percent! Moreover, results are consistent for women who are both premenopausal and postmenopausal, though studies still more strongly support a reduced risk for those who have already experienced menopause.

A more recent study on the topic turned to rats to further explore why cardiovascular activity had such an effect on breast cancer. The rats used in the study weren’t just any rats, either. In fact, they were specially bred with fitness in mind, specifically because it’s thought that one’s fitness levels – though able to be modified through diet and exercise – are innately related to genetics as well.

The study concluded not only that the rats with low natural fitness were approximately four times more likely than those with high natural fitness to develop breast cancer, but were also more likely to show tumors once the disease began – suggesting the longevity of the condition. What’s more, rats with low fitness were found to have cells more prone to division, which, as most know, is a telltale sign of cancer.

Of course, this study was conducted with rats and not humans. Thus, it’s important to understand that there are some limitations to its findings. However, the findings are still telling: There is a connection between higher physical activity levels and a reduced risk of breast cancer.

How to reduce your risk

The findings above leave some asking: “Is there a particular type of cardio exercise I should be doing to reduce my risk?” And the answer is simple: Not at all!

Any type of cardio will reduce your risk of breast cancer, according to the study’s findings. Thus, if your current fitness level permits you only to walk, then walk! If you enjoy running, do that. It’s all about finding something you enjoy and sticking with it!

Cardio + Weight Loss + Physical Health Gain = Reduced Risk Of Breast Cancer

With risk factors like obesity, increased cardio not only has the benefit of reducing your risk of breast cancer, but directly relates to other well-known risk factors as well.
